Using a stretch wrapping machine makes all the difference from a presentation, load integrity, and cost-efficiency standpoint.
Apart from being labour-intensive, wrapping pallets by hand is inconsistent. Poorly wrapped packages may be damaged during transit and look unpresentable as they arrive at their destinations. A pallet wrap machine can be easily adjusted to accommodate pallets of different shapes and sizes and unitise them to a high standard with every use. On top of better presentability and load security, pallet wrapping machines can use stretch wraps more efficiently. Getting a wrapping machine means saving businesses up to 40% in film costs, making it an all-in-one solution.
The cost for pallet wrapping machines can vary depending on their features and performance. The question to need to first answer is “How much is your production output?”. Knowing how many pallets you need to wrap per day will help you find a suitable pallet wrapper that matches your budget and operational needs.
Let's face it: having someone running around a pallet to wrap it by hand in a busy dispatch area isn’t just an accident waiting to happen, it’s also extremely inefficient. With a pallet stretch wrapping machine, you can streamline your packing process and enjoy the following benefits: -Increased productivity -Safer and more secure pallet loads -More cost-efficient use of stretch wraps -Ability to wrap irregular or tall pallets -Reduced workplace hazards

Semi Automatic Wrapping Machine FAQs
Semi-automatic pallet wrapping machines provide a good balance of efficiency and cost-effectiveness. These machines can reduce the amount of time and labour needed to wrap pallets without any compromises on consistency. In addition to improved load stability, semi automatic machines can efficiently use plastic films and wraps, significantly minimising waste during the packaging process. Overall, a semi automatic stretch wrapper can be an all-in-one solution for improving efficiency.
A semi-automatic stretch wrapper is versatile and can accommodate a variety of loads and packages. It can wrap up palletised goods like boxes, cartons, bags, and other packages with irregular shapes. They’re exceptionally good for handling pallets of cans and bottles, which is why they’re highly used in pharmaceuticals and F&B businesses.
While the use of a robot wrapping machine is generally safe, it’s important to operate it properly. Debris and plastic wraps in your work area can be a hazard for tripping, heavy packages or items with sharp edges can cause injury during handling, and moving machine parts can hit staff if they’re not careful. As a rule of thumb, it’s important to wear personal protective equipment when operating a semi automatic wrapping machine and to read up on its manual before use.
Orbital Wrapping Machines FAQ's
Orbital stretch wrap machines are ideal for securing long, irregularly shaped products that cannot be easily wrapped using vertical wrapping systems. Common items include but are not limited to pipes, metal rods, steel bars, timber, plastic tubing, doors, windows, and other construction materials. Thanks to their design, a horizontal wrapping machine can provide full coverage for the mentioned products and ensure that they remain safe and secure during transport.
The main difference between an automatic and a semi-automatic horizontal stretch wrapper would be the level of operator involvement. Semi-automatic machines are more cost-efficient but require some degree of manual intervention so they’re great for businesses with moderate packaging needs. In contrast, an automatic orbital stretch wrapper may have a higher upfront cost but can automate the wrapping process from top to bottom. This makes a fully automatic system ideal for high-volume operations where efficiency is a top priority.
Businesses that produce and transport items such as pipes, steel beams, wooden planks, and doors will find orbital wrapping machines valuable. In this case, sectors like construction, manufacturing, and metalworking have the most to benefit from an orbital stretch wrap machine since it can secure these products without any issues.
Strapping
A Strapping tool is a method used to apply plastic or steel strap to a range of products, items or pallet to combine and stabilize the load.
A strapping tool is a battery or pneumatic hand held device which requires an operator to apply the strapping around the product and using the machine tighten strapping, apply tension and seal.
A strapping machine is bespoke technology which is usually used as part of a process or manufacturing line. Strapping is fed around the product automatically by the machine, and applied with correct tension and sealing for an optimized product.
Automated strapping machines have a lot of "plug in" technologies such as bearer inserters, top and or bottom corners, top, and or side compression to square the load.
There are three strapping materials, Steel, Polyester (PET) and PP (Polypropylene). Steel strapping has been the benchmark strapping/unitizing globally for many years. In the last 10 years PET strapping has taken the market by storm, replacing steel in probably all but the heaviest or hardest applications. It is safer, easier, strong, and meets the acceptable operational standards of all major Australian industry sectors. Steel is still used in very small products such as pipes and tubes, because the PET strapping tool technologies cannot strap very small bundles. In addition, it is still used in hot environments where the strapping is in contact with hot products. Beyond these critical applications polyester strap, purchased from reputable manufacturers, using quality strapping tools or machines will deliver excellent results. PP strapping is normally used in light applications such as closing of small boxes, empty cartons, small light mixed pallets. It has a tendency to stretch beyond 22% of its original state, so is not suitable for compressing and holding heavy or large products.
FROMM is a global manufacturer of Plastic Strapping with four plants around the world. FROMM Plastic Strapping is manufactured in our production centres using up to 98% recycled polyester bottle material on state-of-the-art extrusion lines. The majority of this recycled raw material is produced, amongst others, in FROMM‘s own plastic recycling plant Texplast GmbH in Wolfen. FROMM Plastic Strap is a sustainable packaging solution. Fundamentally you have a manual, semi manual or automated process.
Manual involves using hand tools such as tensioning devices and sealing devices ( sold separately) and a buckle or a clip to create the seal. Really only useful if you strap occasionally.
The rise of battery operated strapping tools has simplified the application of strapping with the material tensioned and sealed within the tool. Modern batteries mean up to 400 plus cycles per charge and these light weight ergonomic devices are very popular.
Automated processes are found in manufacturing and processing facilities such as timber mills, steel and aluminium smelters where cargo is not or do not fit onto a pallet. Growing in popularity is the rise of logistics and distribution where the application of strapping adds to the stability and also security of the cargo.
The strapping material starts in a plastic "state". Once tension is applied to it, it becomes elastic and can hold the load intact while providing some shock absorption. Apply too much tension, and it will lose the ability to absorb shock, putting the load at risk. As a general rule of thumb, more than 35% of the total breaking strain of the material is needed to create the elastic "state". Past the limit of 80%, the strapping material’s ability to absorb shock will be hindered.
A strapping machine will be able to consistently apply the right level of tension in the strapping material, making it easier and faster to pack items without worrying about their integrity.
FROMM’s range of hand strapping tools can be used with straps ranging from 9mm to 32mm. Our PET machines, for instance, are designed for use with 12-16mm PET straps, while PP tensioners can be used with straps measuring 12-19mm.
Applying the correct amount of tension to your packages is crucial. Tightly-packed items are subjected to less movement than packages which are shipped with loose straps. See the simulation testing article linked above for more information on the forces packaged items experience, and for further tips on how to add tension to your boxes, pallets and other packages.
At FROMM, we stock a range of hand strapping machines, each of which is designed for use with a certain type of strap. Our range includes sealers and tensioners for both PET and PP straps, as well as combination tools that can be used with either plastic or steel straps.
A semi strapping machine has its fair share of advantages compared to hand-held tools and fully automated machines. First off, hand-held tools require more manual effort to use and will eventually wear out their operators over extended use. While fully automated systems require less manual intervention, their upfront costs are much higher so it doesn’t make sense to get one if your facility’s packaging needs aren’t that great.
Overall, a semi -auto strapping machine provides a middle ground between hand held tools and automated machines. While semi-automatic machine will require some degree of manual intervention, they’re easy to use and can greatly improve the speed of your operations without breaking the bank.
Just like any other piece of work equipment, it’s important to handle semi automatic strapping machines with care. Before use, make sure to inspect your machine for any damage and perform maintenance as necessary. Moreover, it’s important that to establish a strict set of operating procedures when handling equipment.
Make sure that only authorised personnel should be handling equipment and require operators to wear personal protective equipment such as safety goggles and gloves during use. Additionally, make sure that the your semi automatic machine is also positioned in a safe area that’s free of obstacles and hazards. Setting the necessary guidelines, providing safety gear, and keeping your surroundings clear of hazards will greatly minimise work related risks.
A semi-automatic pallet strapping handles polypropylene (PP) straps. However, do keep in mind that the strap you choose should greatly depend on the types of packages you need to secure. If you’re unsure on the straps and machines you need for your packaging operations, feel free to contact us and we’ll gladly provide you with tailor-fit recommendations!
Choosing between a hand-held battery-powered strapping tool and an automatic strapping machine depends on your operational needs. A hand-held battery-powered strapping tool offers portability and flexibility, making it ideal for smaller operations. On the other hand, an automatic strapping machine is designed for high-volume work, but the improved efficiency requires a larger investment and more space. For lower-volume needs, a battery-operated strapping machine can already be a good strapping solution.
Just like any other work tool, it’s important to wear the right personal protective equipment as you handle a battery operated strapping machine. Wearing gloves will protect you hands from any cuts and abrasions you may have while handling the battery strapping tool while keeping some safety glasses on can protect your eyes from any debris that you may come into contact with. Additionally, do know that every FROMM tool comes with a safety operations manual so make sure to read its contents before you start using one.
FROMM’s range of automatic plastic strapping machines can be easily integrated into your existing production and packing lines. If your processes already make use of automation, one of our PET strapping machines can help your business progress one step closer to a production line that does not depend on manual labour.
Polyester strapping is an environmentally friendly option, especially when paired with FROMM’s commitment to sustainability. Our PET strapping materials are made from polyester that uses up to 98 percent recycled materials. When you are finished with your plastic strapping, the material can be recycled once more to further your business’ sustainability practices.
Hand Held Strapping Tools
Battery strapping tools are designed to work with two primary strapping materials: polypropylene (PP) and polyester (PET). Polypropylene is known for its lightweight, flexible, and cost-efficient qualities, making it well-suited for standard packaging and less demanding tasks. Polyester, however, provides greater strength and resilience, making it the better choice for heavy-duty applications and securing heavier loads.
Combination tools have a competitive advantage when it comes to general use. As a rule of thumb, they’re a great choice for simpler packaging jobs since their multiple functionalities can get work done quickly and efficiently. But for pallets that are much more complex, it would be best to go for separate tensioners and sealers since they offer more precision.
In addition to their cost-effectiveness, manual strapping tools are highly portable. Unlike automatic strapping machines that are expensive, placed in a fixed area, and need a constant connection to a power source, a manual pallet strapping machine can be used in different locations at the cost of more physical effort. But since a manual strapping tool can put a large load on their operator, they're only ideal for smaller operations.
Just like any other work equipment, handling a manual strapping machine should be done with care. Before use, make it a habit to inspect the tool for any damage and wear protective equipment to avoid injuries from sharp edges and debris. On another note, make sure to read user manuals and to always be cautious of your fingers when handling straps.
Pneumatic strapping tools provide strong and consistent tensioning which are ideal for high-volume and demanding operations. Compared to manual tools, a pneumatic strapping machine can significantly reduce operator fatigue with its ability to utilise compressed air. Conversely, battery-powered tools may offer the convenience of portability but may not tension and seal straps as quickly.
Both pneumatic steel and pneumatic plastic strapping are highly capable strapping solutions but the better option will ultimately depend on your needs. Businesses in the metals industry generally prefer to work with steel strapping to handle hot metals, pipes, tubes, and hexpacks. On the other hand, PET straps can handle light to heavy applications but are much better for fixed workstations. In this case, opt for steel when handling hot, heavy, dense products and go for plastic if you’re handling a wider range of light to heavy equipment.
Pneumatic strapping machines are a great choice for businesses with moderate to high packaging needs. They excel in demanding strapping tasks since the high tension force they provide allows them to secure products that are used in construction, metalworking, and manufacturing.
Generally, pneumatic machines are best for businesses with fixed strapping stations. Since they’ll require a connection to an air compressor so its hoses and airlines may be an inconvenience if operators need to move around often. But if you need to secure heavy items like bricks, steel beams, timber and more, then getting a pneumatic strapping tool will serve as one of your best investments yet.
PP Strapping Machine FAQs
A PP strap is the best option for lighter strapping operations. It’s used for small cartons, boxes, and bundles are arguably the only serious choice for these applications.
Compared to steel strapping, which is designed for heavy-duty products, PP strapping is more affordable and can effectively handle light to moderate loads. In PET strapping’s case, PP isn’t as strong but makes up for its elasticity which is useful for handling oddly shaped pallets. In a nutshell, PP strapping can be a great choice for those lighter operations that want a good balance of reliability and cost-effectiveness.
Polypropylene (PP) strapping is ideal for securing a wide range of packages, particularly those that are lighter or less susceptible to heavy impact. PP’s flexible but strong nature works exceptionally well for unitising smaller boxes, securing pallets, and strapping all other goods.
FROMM's polypropylene (PP) strap is not only designed for high-performance strapping machines, but it’s also a sustainable option for packaging. Polypropylene is a recyclable material, meaning it can be repurposed into new products after use. With widths ranging from 5mm to 19mm, our PP straps meet the high standards needed for reliable, environmentally friendly packaging.
PET Strapping Machine FAQs
Polyester (PET) strapping is lighter and more flexible compared to steel strapping. While PET strapping has a lower breaking strain than steel, it can handle up to 2.5 times its breaking strain in shock applications. Despite steel having a stronger tensile strength, this makes PET strapping suitable for most applications.
Steel Strapping Machine FAQs
The biggest benefit of steel strapping would be its superior tensile strength. Unlike PP strapping which is flexible and built for lighter loads, a steel strap’s high tensile force is designed to secure larger and heavier items. While PET straps are strong, they’re generally suited for moderate packages. In this case, steel straps are more rigid which makes it the more suitable choice for hefty loads. While it may have a higher cost, a steel strapping machine will prove its worth through its robust tensioning capabilities.
A steel strapping machine is designed to handle heavy-duty materials. It’s commonly used in industries like construction and metalworking since these businesses regularly manage heavy, bulky, and hot products. The superior tensioning force of steel straps can effectively fasten massive loads of building materials, steel coils, and lumber and guarantee their safety during transit.
Steel strapping isn’t necessarily known to be eco-friendly but it’s recyclable and long-lasting. As long as they’re properly maintained, they can be used repeatedly so businesses can significantly reduce their environmental footprint while saving up on operational costs.
Strap Dispenser FAQs
Strapping dispensers are great from a work efficiency and safety standpoint. Working with plastic and steel straps can get pretty messy so having a heavy duty dispenser on board will secure them and ensure that they don’t turn into a tripping hazard. A quality strapping dispenser can also reduce the manual handling of strapping materials and this can minimise the risk of workplace injuries caused by repetitive strain or heavy lifting.
There are many factors to keep in mind when choosing a strapping dispenser but the top considerations would be the dispenser’s capacity and ease of use. Having a dispenser that can accommodate higher loads of straps and that’s easy to move around will be a great addition to any facility since they can greatly reduce operator fatigue.
A strap dispenser is generally safe to use but just like any other piece of work equipment, there are safety considerations to keep in mind. First, make sure that you are following proper loading procedures and are using forklifts to move your heavy duty dispensers around. If you’re using a portable plastic strapping dispenser make it a point to check on its braking system to avoid potentially oncoiling hazards. Lastly, always wear personal protective equipment such as gloves and safety glasses to protect yourself from sharp edges and debris while strapping.

Carton Erector Machines FAQs
A carton erector improves packaging efficiency by automating the box-forming process from top to bottom. When paired with a carton sealing and void fill machine, an automatic carton erector can fully eliminate the time and effort that comes with manual assembly. In turn, investing in one will speed up your packaging efficiency also improving package security.
Carton erectors can deal with a variety of sealing materials, including adhesive tape, hot glue, and gummed paper tape. The choice of seal depends on your specific needs, such as the type of product being packaged and sustainability preferences.
Your overall work volume and the size of cartons you regularly handle are two things to consider. Getting a machine that can accommodate boxes of different sizes and has a high output capacity will ensure quick turnaround times for your packages. Moreover, it’s best to get a carton erector machine from a provider that offers warranty and open support lines. This will ensure that you will experience no downtime in case you run into any issues.
Strapping Heads
A strapping head is the core component of an automatic strapping system, responsible for applying, tensioning, and sealing the strap around packages or pallets. It ensures that products are securely strapped for transport or storage, preventing shifting or damage.
FROMM strapping heads are compatible with both steel and plastic (PET/PP) strapping materials, offering flexibility based on your specific application needs.
Steel strapping is ideal for heavier loads like metal and metal coils, while plastic strapping is suitable for lighter to medium-duty applications.

Strap Choppers
- Waste reduction: Turns bulky and long strapping waste into smaller, manageable pieces for recycling.
- Operational efficiency: Reduces the manual handling of long straps, improving worker safety and reducing disposal costs.
- Sustainability: Supports recycling initiatives by converting strapping into a form that's easier to process for reuse.
The appropriate model depends on the volume and type of strapping waste you generate. Low-volume models work well for operations with minimal strapping, while high-volume industries like timber, brick, and tile may require a larger model, which can process wider straps more efficiently.
Once the straps are chopped, they are collected in bulk bags or drums and can be sent to recycling centres.
The chopped material is more compact and easier to manage, reducing storage and transportation costs.
