REDUCE, REUSE & RECYCLE

At FROMM Packaging Australia, we believe we have a responsibility to reduce our business’s environmental impact as much as we possibly can.

Every day, secure and reliable packaging ensures the safe transport of goods around Australia and the world. From agriculture to construction, manufacturing to healthcare, packaging is critical to the smooth operation of our most essential industries.

Our industry is striving to create packaging solutions that use fewer resources and generate less waste, to ensure a sustainable future for packaging. It’s a challenge we’ve embraced at FROMM over the past two decades – innovating our products and processes to reduce their environmental impact, while making sound business sense for our customers.

To Achieve The Best Possible Reduce, Reuse And Recycle Outcomes In Our business, We:

  • Prioritise efficiency: When processes and products are more efficient, everyone benefits – the environment, our customers, our team, and the bottom line. We optimise for highest-possible performance with the least inputs and raw resources, eliminating unnecessary steps, reducing waste, and streamlining operations.

  • Employ life-cycle thinking: Our products and parts are designed to last longer; and when that life is over, to be used in a different way through recycling or reprocessing. From the very start of the creation process, we assess our products’ entire lifecycle – from design through to manufacturing, distribution, usage and end-of-life.

  • Innovate: Our skilled technicians draw on FROMM’s eight decades of industry expertise along with the latest technologies and concepts, to test and develop new products – never compromising on product quality, and meeting our customers’ needs.

  • Collaborate: We actively work alongside our customers, involving them in our in-house testing facilities to trial concepts and products to meet their specific needs. This collaborative and evidence-based approach allows us to design solutions that not only reduce environmental impacts, but are efficient and fit-for-purpose.

By supplying our customers with efficient, well-designed products and smart material-machine combinations that meet their precise needs, we reduce material use and waste through the product lifecycle, support our customers to meet growing expectations for more sustainable packaging, and significantly reduce our customers’ costs on materials usage, shipping and waste disposal.

While we keep working to reduce our environmental impact each day, we know there’s a long road ahead to a sustainable packaging future.

While we have made good progress over the past two decades at FROMM, industry-wide collaboration and knowledge-sharing will be crucial to our collective long-term success.

In 20XX, we worked with Woolworths to upskill their food and grocery suppliers to improve the packaging of incoming goods. Not only did this help suppliers to better meet receivables protocols – greatly improving efficiency at Woolworths’ distribution centres – it educated suppliers on secure and appropriate packaging practices, reducing unnecessary waste and damage to products.

We then joined the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) in 2023, currently 2,300 members strong and growing. Learn more about APCO’s sustainable packaging goals here, and our annual APCO reports below.

FAQs

FROMM’s PET strapping is made from 98% recycled material. Our performance stretch films are made from virgin material, but we also have a range of hand and machine films that contain 30% PCR resins.

Some of our smaller protective packaging solutions contain recycled material, such as our dunnage export bags. Contact our team at info@fromm-pack.com.au for more information if you’re looking for a specific product containing recycled materials.

All FROMM products are marked with their relevant recycling codes, so that our customers can easily sort and manage their packaging waste.

In Australia, recycling and waste processing is managed differently between council areas, states and waste management providers – meaning that there are currently no universal guidelines for disposing of packaging waste in Australia. To better understand what options are available in your location, we recommend that our customers consult with their waste management provider and/or relevant governmental bodies.

All of FROMM’s products are designed according to the principles of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle – with ‘Reduce’ being our first and highest priority.

‘Reduce’ means innovating to reduce the raw material and inputs required to manufacture our products. It means innovating for efficiency, so that our tools and machines consume less energy and last longer. ‘Reduce’ also means working with our customers to find smart material-machine combinations that meet their precise needs, and then helping them to use those products correctly – cutting down on material usage, unnecessary waste, and saving costs.

While we are continually innovating to reduce the amount of plastic and unrecyclable materials in our products, at a technical level, certain products are currently very difficult to produce using recycled or part-recycled content – especially without compromising on quality and performance. While progress is being made, many innovative recyclable materials that are currently in development or are on the market are cost-prohibitive and not yet suitable for commercial scale.

This is an area we are working on actively, and will continue to evolve as technology advances and more solutions become available.

The first and simplest way we can help you is by auditing your current packaging systems to understand if they are running as efficiently as they can, and are fit-for-purpose. We can then test any recommendations for containment or performance improvements at FROMM’s R&D centre and tilt testing facilities.

Many of our customers discover through this process that significant savings can be realised – in the past, we’ve helped customers save on materials and costs up to 40%.
